Most recent iPhones (XS and newer), Google Pixels (3a and newer), and Samsung Galaxy S20+/Note20+ models support eSIM. Check your phone's IMEI or settings for eSIM compatibility before buying. Older or carrier-locked devices may not work.
Do I need to turn on data roaming?
Yes. On arrival in Japan, open Settings > Cellular/Mobile Data, pick your Japan eSIM line, and switch Data Roaming ON. The eSIM needs this to reach local networks, and it costs nothing extra.
Can I keep my home SIM active at the same time?
Yes. Your phone can run Dual SIM: keep your home SIM for calls and texts (roaming off to avoid fees) and set the Japan eSIM as your primary data line. Turn off iMessage/FaceTime on the home line to avoid SMS charges.
What happens if I run out of data while travelling?
